Introducing DASLLD
DASLLD-Deafness and Additional Specific Language and/or Literacy Difficulties became the area of interest for a SERSEN working group during 2004-5. Its aim was to identify the incidence of children (aged 3-16) with a primary hearing loss and additional specific language and literacy concerns. The plan was to collate case examples and share good practice and then, depending on the outcome, propose a future course of action.
As the returns from the South East area demonstrated a significant pupil population, and a high interest level from professionals, the SERSEN working group collated guidelines of good practice, culminating in Mapping the Way: Strategies and resources for the practitioner working with children with deafness and additional specific language and literacy difficulties. This document is available for free download below.
Materials referenced during the study and resources available to download and use in the classroom are accessible from this site; the Mapping the WayProcess paper details the manner in which the study was undertaken.
Mapping the Way is split into easily accessible chapters:
- Introduction
- Where does my child fit?
- What works for the child?
- Where do I go now?
- How do you learn?
- Information for mainstream teachers
- Early Years
